I have been thinking of moving my blog to my website for some time. Now seems to be the time. All previous posts will remain here; however, posts after Civilian Symposium part 2 can be found on my website at www.txcwcivilian.org on the home page.
The Welcome Reception and Social is always fun to see the different wrappers and smoking jackets.
The first presentation of the Symposium was Friday night "Frozen Assets: The Ice Industry and Ice Harvesting in 19th Century America". It was very interesting; a topic I had never given much thought to. In fact I was just reading a diary that mentioned how much ice they had in storage so I'm glad I was able to hear this particular topic.

Of course the marketplace was open and the first set of originals were up. Unfortunately my photos of the originals got mixed up with other photos and I can't distinguish which were from 2016. It will take some time to sort them all out; I apologize as I know the originals are what many of you enjoy seeing.

Saturday is conference fabric day. I posted my dress previously. Since I was on stage I did not get any pictures of any of the others as a group.

The first presentation was K. Krewer's "For the Fashion of this World Passeth Away: Identifying Changes in Mid-Victorian Clothing Styles for Women". As always, K's presentation was fantastic and included wonderful handouts and a CD of images. Next was new speaker Sally Ryan and "Readin’, Ritin’, Rithmetic, Reality: Education in Mid-19th Century America". Another topic I knew little about and Sally did a great job with her presentation. The morning finished out with “Lace is Always Handsome and Fashionable” presented by Beth Chamberlin. Beth is extremely knowledgeable on lace of the time and gave a great presentation on it's production and uses.

My presentation came after lunch. As I said before, I was not pleased with it as I ran out of time. I had timed it before hand, so it was a disappointment to me and the audience. Carolann finished up the afternoon with "Fashion Meets Technology: Skirt Supporting Petticoats", which addressed the evolution and manufacturing of hoop skirts.

Saturday night included dinner and a ball. I always enjoy these events and listening to the music. Smash the Windows was the band and they are always a pleasure to hear.

As happens occasionally at the conference, Daylight Savings Time started over the weekend, so up early for breakfast the Sunday presentations. The first presentation of the was "You Can Do It! Developing a Toolbox for Planning Civilian Immersion Events" presented by Jessica Craig and Betsy Connolly. This was such an informative presentation and well done. Although I have not been able to attend any of Betsy's events I have been to a few of Jessica's events and can vouch for the fact that she really knows this subject matter.

To finish out the event Kelly Dorman presented "So Much More Than a Research Tool: Taking a Closer Look at Cartes d’Visite". Kelly discussed the CDV as a cultural artifact rather than just a research tool. Sadly, Kelly passed away from cancer not too long after the conference. I'm grateful to have been able to know her and learn from her one last time.

I heard that the other track of presentations included wonderful presentations as well. "The Animal that Forged America: The Indestructible Mule" by Vince Hawley DVM was apparently quite entertaining and I wish I could have hear it! Nicky Hughes, as always, was very popular speaking on "The Other Side of Temperance: The Manufacture, Sale & Consumption of Whiskey in Mid-19th Century America". It probably didn't hurt that samples were part of the presentation!

So ended the Civilian Symposium as we know it. I so wish I was able to attend each presentation and all the workshops! The end of conference is always emotional for me, especially when I lived so far away. Even now, living so much closer, it is still sad to have to end the weekend. I so much enjoy the comradery of like minded people and learning about the 19th Century. So...on to 2018! I can't wait to see what Carolann has in mind!
Real life got in the way including a new job and moving to a new state...again. I have a lot of catching up to do so please be patient. I'm sure I will forget something, but I'll cover the big stuff for sure. So to start: The Civilian Symposium 2016.

The 22nd Civilian Symposium was held in Camp Hill Pennsylvania in March. As always, it was a wonderful experience full of great workshops, lectures and originals. I was privileged to speak this year. My topic was "To the Madhouse: Female Incarceration in 19th Century Lunatic Asylums". It was very well attended. I was not happy with the presentation as I went over time and did not get to cover some of the topics I wanted to. One of the perks of speaking at the symposium is getting a dress length of fabric from which to make a dress.

Here is my inspiration:
This was really fun. Working with the fur can be a challenge though. I have not yet finished my cuffs with everything else going on but I plan to.
This was another fun workshop. I had done beading like this before when I was in Camp Fire Girls; I always enjoyed it so it was nice to know that it was a period skill.

2016 was the last Civilian Symposium as we know it and the last at the Camp Hill location. A symposium will not occur in 2017; however, a rebirth will occur in 2018. I have enjoyed my attendance at the symposium over the last 10 years or so but I am very excited about what is in store in 2018! This time was a fold over shawl. I drove out to Gettysburg after work on Friday and made it to Needle and Thread in time to pick out my fabric. It was a difficult choice; they had a lot of wools. Thank goodness because I could not find any wools in my area. I decided on these

The gold is really darker than what appears in the photo.

The shawl is comprised of a central square of a solid, which is trimmed with a print. The print is applied with two sides right side out and two sides wrong side out so when it is folded over the right side of the trim shows on both layers of the shawl.

The print is then trimmed with a band of solid, which is fringed.

Abraham Lincoln dedicated the Gettysburg National Cemetery on November 19, 1863 with the Gettysburg Address; this date is technically called Dedication Day and the Gettysburg Address is read on that day. The Saturday of that week is Remembrance Day to honor the soldiers who died during the Civil War; this has occurred since 1863. The modern celebration weekend includes a parade, vendors and several balls.

This year I stayed in Gettysburg for the whole weekend at the Brick House Inn on Baltimore Street, right on the parade route. The Brick House consists of two houses actually. One built in the 1890s and another built in the 1830s and was there during the Battle of Gettysburg.
Our room was in the Civil War house; unfortunately, the inside of the house has been completely redone for bedrooms so very little of the original interior still exists. But our room was really nice and looked out over Baltimore St.
My husband came out for the event so this was nice for the two of us. He flew into BWI, so we didn't get to Gettysburg until around 4:00. He had never been to Gettysburg so I tried to introduce him to the various things I like about the town; the Inn was a good start. By the time we got checked in and settled in we were both starving. Getting into any of the main dining rooms was impossible at this late stage but we walked down to the Dobbin House and ate in the tavern.
My husband only dresses out for the balls. This ball is held at the Eisenhower Hotel a bit out of town in a modern ballroom. The band was Beck's Philadelphia Brigade Band. It was the same band that played with the Chester County Choral Society at their CW 150th event. The only problem I find with Joy's balls is the way the dance master calls the dances. We are shown the dance, we are walked through the dance and then finally we get to dance; the majority of the time is getting to the dance rather than dancing.
Saturday was a beautiful day. A bit chilly but not bone chilly cold as other years.I wore my very first conference dress and the paletot I bought from a friend and was plenty warm enough.
The breakfast at the Inn is amazing. It includes a dessert as well. Once breakfast was over we headed out to see the town and of course shop. My husband bought me some wonderful earrings.
We headed back to the Inn to secure seats on the porch for the parade. Along the way we met friends and invited them to join us at the Inn along with others also staying at the Brick House.
The proceeds from this ball go to the Land Conservancy of Adams County. This ball is smaller than most during the weekend; however, I really enjoyed this one. Period dress is not required. Smash the Windows played and was wonderful. The caller could be a bit gruff and a bit of a perfectionist. He walked us through some of the dances, but only once and then it was danced. There were several there who knew the dances and that really helped keep things going. They host dances in Fairfield on a regular basis to teach period dancing.
We finished our weekend in Gettysburg with lunch at Garryowen's, a visit to Needle and Thread (of course), the Visitor's Center, and a special drive through the battlefield with Don and Carolann Schmitt. We had a great weekend and were sorry to see it end.
I have a good friend that lives in Hamden so it was a must attend. This was a great class! Learned several techniques I wasn't familiar with.

Carolann started with a lecture with images of various uses of braid work as well as a display of originals. The following are all from the collection of Carolann Schmitt.
Carolann provided us with a kit that included all the threads, fabric, and paper we would need. Our handouts included braiding patterns. Also included with the kit were these really cool FriXion pens from Pilot. They erase with heat so can be used on most fabrics and the lines disappear when ironed.

The first project we worked on was braid work appropriate for cuffs and collars. We traced a pattern onto lightweight fabric using the FriXion pens.

We then filled the pattern using our sewing machines and different weights of thread.

When completed we ironed over the design to erase the tracing marks.

I really like the way this turns out. The little curly ques can prove to be a challenge, but I think with practice and a bit more patience I could do an acceptable job of this.

The next project was a small pillow top or pin cushion. The tracing technique was using chalk and paper piercing.

After pricking the paper, it needs to be smoothed on the back side.

The pattern is then laid on the fabric and chalk powder is used to mark the pattern. Be sure to test any chalk you use to ensure it will brush away completely. We used cotton balls to gently brush the chalk over the design so it will transfer through the perforation onto the fabric.

The rest of the work is done by hand. The pattern is filled in with cording sewn down with evenly spaced stitched. My thread broke during this part so my design is a bit cock-eyed.

Contrasting cording can be woven through the first cording to enhance the design.

The next process was using stitch and tear. We traced our pattern onto tracing paper and then pricked it as above. Rather than using chalk to make the pattern we sewed the paper directly on the fabric. This can be done by machine or by hand as in the project above. I chose to sew the cording down by hand.

We worked a little with satouche braiding as well.

And we learned to make twisted cording; unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of that.

This was a wonderful workshop! I learned so many new techniques, as embellishment was not a strong point for me. I hope to use some of these newly learned skills soon. My first workshop was in Gettysburg, Berthes, Fichus and Pelerines. These items are dress accessories that can be used to change the look of a dress.

A berthe is a large cape-like collar falling over the shoulders and bodice of a dress (Schmitt, Carolann. Berthes, Fichus and Pelerines, pg. 3) and is usually a separate piece from the dress. We see these often on evening gowns.

A fichu, alternately was more shawl-like and comes over the shoulders to the front.

Collection of Carolann Schmitt

Then there is the pelerine. I really think this is what the "dreaded triangle thingy" is attempting to imitate. A pelerine is more cape-like and can match the dress, changing a bodice cut for evening to something more appropriate to day time.

I had taken Carolann Schmitt's Fichu workshop at the Civilian Symposium in March and thought perhaps I would like a pelerine. But I looked at my wardrobe and decided another fichu would be better, one with long tails.

As with all of the Genteel Arts classes, a well researched handout was provided that included period descriptions, illustrations, bibliography and instructions for constructing the chosen garment and, of course, the patterns. Before we started sewing, Carolann gave a lecture on the different accessories including more period photos and originals; she had a few originals with her to show as well. You can see these in the Fichu workshop pictures here.

I did not have enough of the netting I chose to cut the pattern exactly as the pattern called for; the pattern being one piece over the shoulders, so we altered it a bit, adding a shoulder seam to accommodate the size of the pattern.

Once the pattern was cut and the pieces sewn together, I added net ruching.

Once the ruching was in place I will add a narrow black velvet trim down the center of the ruching; this I still need to finish. I will probably also add a small hook and eye at the waist to hold it as I do not want to wrap it around the back although that is an option.

These pieces are really quite easy to make and can add so much to your period wardrobe. The participants staying in the house are limited and those who have been before get first right of refusal to stay on the property. It can take some time on the waiting list to get in, but it is worth the wait! This is the type of event we all dream of - period building, few intrusions - period moments abound.

Welbourne is in Middleburg Va., Loudon County, horse country. It is beautiful! The drive down from Pennsylvania was very nice with all the trees in full Fall color, and the weather was perfect.

The house was originally built in the 18th
century and added on through the years and remains in the same family.
It is also on the National Register and the land is under a conservation
easement. The house serves as a bed and breakfast on a regular basis.

The
organizer of the event requested little or no photos so I tried to
abide by the rules and personally have very few photos; however several others did take photos and Jim Pfeiffer was on hand to take tin types. You can find links to the various collections at the end of this post.

My roommate for the weekend arrived at the same time and we were shown to our room. We stayed on the second floor and shared a bed, being good friends that wasn't an issue. We quickly changed as dinner was just about ready.

During dinner, I think, we maintained first person very well. We discussed our experiences through the war and what the future might hold.

At this event we were lucky enough to have two wonderful African American interpreters, Cheney McKnight and Anita Henderson. Cheney cooked lunch and dinner for us and Anita served. The food was wonderful and period.

Saturday evening after dinner we sat in the parlor and talked, read jokes and other pieces and had Pimms. I had never had Pimms and now I think I'm addicted. There was also a piano in the house so I attempted to play a bit. I need a keyboard again and practice!
Saturday was my first full day at the event. Breakfast was cooked and
served by the bed and breakfast staff and was very good, a full American
breakfast. After breakfast I sat with some of the other Pennsylvania
ladies for a tin type on the porch. We were all in our wrappers. Jim
also made a group tin type and I had my own done.
After photos I spent some time making a sewing box. As usual, though, I didn't finish it. It would make a great conference workshop, so I'm researching the design for how period it is. It came from a modern book on Victorian projects but it did not have any documentation on it's use during the period. It's a cute little box though.
One of the activities for the weekend for the weekend was a Friendship Album. These were popular during the mid-19th century and included verses or little tokens. We hope to continue this into the next years' events and have a record of our event.
Later in the afternoon some of us went to visit the horses. Welbourne also serves as a retirement ranch for horses. We brought apples and they were a bit skittish at first, then they realize we had apples and they wouldn't leave us alone.
Following the church we had a reenactment of Garner Peters and Scrivington's return. Garner Peters was a slave who left his owner during the war and taking a prized horse, Scrivington. After sometime, Peters decided to return and brought the horse back with him. It was quite an event at the time.
After the rides everyone began packing up and leaving. It was a great weekend! Jessica Craig does a wondrous job organizing these events! I can't say enough for her knowledge and thoughtfulness in providing
us such amazing events in which to play. Eagerly looking forward to the
next ones!
The weekend of September 19th & 20th found me at Colonial Plantation at Ridley Creek State Park. The site is only a half hour from me, so it was very convenient. Oh, what a great site! The park itself is beautiful, and the living history site is wonderful. They have crops, livestock, and an 18th century house that is very well kept. The site sits right on Ridley Creek, a very nice water way, which saw a bit of bathing during the weekend. Sorry no pictures of that.

This was my first visit to this event and really my first true event with the 97th. I really didn't know what to expect. Since it was so close, I day tripped for the event. Saturday, I decided to attend as a local woman visiting the camps. I wore my Steamboat dress and bonnet. I set up my table and brought a coffee cake and Necco wafters. This probably wasn't the best choice. Apparently, this event is more of a wash dress type event as there were very few women, maybe three counting me, in fashionable dress.

There were two battles on Saturday that pretty much utilized the full site and the house.

There was some first person living history after the battle with the wounded, which was very well done, most with Confederate units. Wounded were around the house and brought in as well. These men really knew their first person; their conversations, the screams, the worry about mess mates was very impressive. I approached some of the ladies and asked if I could participate in their living history the next day, when I would be dressed more appropriately.

Not much public visited us as we were set back behind the corn, so the rest of the day was spent under the fly talking. I left once the site closed to the public. I have to say that I know I am getting old; I used to really enjoy the camping aspect of the hobby, sitting around the campfire at night. Now I am so grateful for events close to home for the hot shower and my own bed.

Sunday I returned, but this time dressed more appropriately for the event in a wash dress. I wore my blue and white check homespun and found out that is it now about two inches too big; thank goodness for apron ties.

When I arrived I decided to take a closer look at the house and various outbuildings up on the hill. It is lovely. It is set up for the 18th century, the era the site usually interprets.

The gentlemen who portrayed the wounded did a wonderful job again with first person. I have limited experience with a nursing impression. But the others were so gracious and helped me along with the impression. The soldiers' impressions were amazing. One soldier was shell shocked and at first I was seriously concerned about him until I realized it was his impression. Another young man was "gut shot" and died as I tried to help him. I was very appreciative of this group for letting me participate with them.

Attending this event reminded me of what I like and what I don't like about the hobby. The lack of civilian participation and activities is one reason I stopped attending "reenactments" and starting looking for more living history type events. If few public come through the camp and there is no one to interact with, we're basically sitting around in funny clothes discussing the merits of Star Trek versus Star Wars. I'm not degrading this type of event, we all do this for different reasons; some for the camaraderie, others for a weekend activity for the family, and others such as myself who enjoy the living history and role play. OK, and the dress up.

All in all this was a fun event; Sunday's weather could not have been nicer and once I was able to participate in the living history side of it, which I really enjoy. At the 97th's camp there was some discussion about how to better involve the group's civilian participants in event activities and perhaps ramp up the authenticity a bit. I look forward to seeing what we come up with.
Saturday was not the best as far as weather was concerned; it rained all day and was humid. But I was inside an air conditioned building so didn't suffer too much.

We had several booths: my fancy goods booth (which turned out more shoes and parasols for sale), baked goods, candies, relics and curiosities, post office, industry table, music, and a display of Scottish items.
Because of the rain we didn't have many visitors; we were prepared for them, but alas...

At one point I decided to get out a bit and left the fort. Upon my return I was stopped and a pass was required. I did not have a pass, but one was quickly written up for me.

This would come in handy on Sunday. After acquiring the pass I noticed that the tie from my hoop had come undone and was dragging in the dirt so I requested to use one of the rooms off the guard's room to remedy the issue. It was quite harmless as the room was dark and I turned my back. However, upon leaving the room I noticed all the gentlemen had turned their backs to the area. I thought it a nice touch.
The poem is quite long and written in old Scottish dialect so a bit difficult to understand. That is where Mrs. Duffy comes in and she translated the gist of the poem after the recital.

Saturday night was a dance with a nice musical group as well as a
dance group. I didn't stay very long as a friend needed a ride to the Metro so we left early and I returned to my hotel.

Sunday morning I returned to the fort and used my pass. As I entered the troops were in formation getting the day's orders. As I approached them I offered my pass to the commander, who first thanked me for playing into the scenario and then proceeded to use my pass to illustrate to the troops what to look for when visitor's arrived at the fort.

I entered the site just in time for church. I am not a religious person; however, the message at this service was delivered very well by the young preacher. I did not participate in the Communion but enjoyed the service very much.

After the service I went back to the Fair hall. Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day, cool with a light breeze. Some of the ladies required their shawls. We had many more visitors on this day. Part of the visitor's experience was to sign in and then they were given stamps with which they could buy candies and baked goods. Some of the visitors were a little surprised by this but really got into it, picking out different things to try. I thought this interaction was a great idea and it was well carried out by the fair organizers.

I'm sorry for the lack of photos; we were told there was only one person authorized to take pictures so I tried to honor that and not pull out the phone too often. Tim Massey took many photos at the event and you can find some on the "For Cause and Country" Facebook page and on Tim Massey's Facebook page.

All in all I had a decent time at the Sanitary Commission Fair. I would like to see it expanded a bit and perhaps a few other fair activities. However, the organizers did a great job with it this year and really tried to recreate a period Fair for the participants as well as the public. The Symposium information and registration are available!! The Symposium will be held March 9-13 at the Radisson Convention Center and Hotel in Camp Hill, Pa. As many of you know I am a big fan of this event and encourage anyone interested in the civilian side of the mid-19th century to attend. This does not mean just women's topics; there are several topics that will be of interest to men as well. This year again includes workshops, tours, presentations, needlework competition, the marketplace and a ball! I will speak at the event on women in lunatic asylums in the mid-19th century.

I hope to see many of my readers at the Symposium in March; you won't regret it!!Annette Bethkehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498791479254104257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4022647379997928907.post-6052326831841281402015-07-20T19:18:00.001-05:002015-07-20T19:18:20.137-05:00Gettysburg National Base Ball Festival and the Base Ball DressLast weekend was the Gettysburg National Base Ball Festival. Sixteen teams from Tennessee to Maine playing various versions of 19th Century base ball. I had planned to attend this event for about a month and a half with a new sheer dress. A friend draped a bodice block for me so I waited for the pattern to arrive before starting, not a smart choice. I should have at least started the skirt. As it was I started it with only a couple of weeks lead time. Should have been enough but...

I had the fabric already and thought I found my inspiration; see my previous post. However, that was not the case. I found another dress I really wanted to make.

It was perfect for the event. I didn't have fabric for the lower sleeves so I took a weekend and went to Gettysburg and Needle and Thread. I found a sheer cotton and thought it would be perfect. But when I put it together it just was not sheer enough. So I then changed gears and decided on open sleeves with under sleeves, not pagoda, just open. I used this dress from K. Krewer's collection as my inspiration for the trim.

I spent a week of the midnight oil working on this dress. The trim is on, but the the bodice didn't fit. Readjusted, still didn't fit. I finally had to give up on it and ended up wearing an older dress sheer. It was too big but was able to move the eyes over to do for the day.

And since I moved over the waist closure the front overlapped and I didn't need the scarf in the front. Of course I have no photos of me from the base ball festival.

The original dress will get done eventually. I will just need to sit on it for a bit and let the frustration fade away :).

Enough dress drama, on to the base ball! The Base Ball Festival is in it's 6th year and this civilian spectator picnic scenario was organized by Elaine Kessinger of the Atlantic Guard Soldiers Aid Society. I arrived early with the rain. I was instantly glad I was not wearing a new dress as it was wet and muddy. Other members of AGSAS arrived with a fly and we had a great little civilian interpretation.

The games were great fun and I think the teams really appreciated our period appearance. Despite the rain and the heat we had a great time. The fields are in a beautiful location, a bit out of town with green hills and barns surrounding. It was a very entertaining day and I was very happy to finally get out to an event again and visit with friends.
The band and Choral alternated and only played together for one piece. They played Northern and Southern pieces.

I really enjoyed the concert; they did play a few modern pieces. It was strange to hear Follow the Drinking Gourd sung in traditional choral style. There was also a piece with the Gettysburg Address set to music.

They ended with a strong rendition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic with band accompanying. I heard about this concert by chance and I'm glad I did.
I commemorated the event at Hopewell Furnace and the After the Storm: 1865 event.
A wonderful woman, Jessica Craig, organizes this event every year. It is held at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site outside Elverson, Pa. I look forward to this event. Even when I was in Texas, I traveled to this event. It is so much fun and everyone does their best to maintain first person. Although overnight housing is available for the event, I decided to only day trip on Saturday due to pre-moving chaos.

Because of the immersion style of this event I was only able to get limited photos; however, Jessica served as the official event photographer and took many wonderful photos from the event. You can find them and those taken by others on Jessica's Facebook page here and here.

My back story was as a Unionist Texan who had left Texas at the beginning of the war due to my and my husband's Unionist leanings. With the end of the war my husband returned to Texas to see to our property and removed to the country, stopping in Hopewell to visit friends. Jessica assigns goals to participants to encourage interaction. My goal was to discuss living in Texas and to convince others to relocate to Texas.

I reached the site about 9:30 and found the village just finishing up breakfast. The cooks were clearing up and the men preparing firewood.

The day was full of activities. Mrs. Kessler, Mr. & Mrs. Groff and I visited on the porch of the iron master's house for a bit on the porch.

While visiting, Mrs Kessler invited me to a lunch she organized at the boarding house, set up by her maid of all work, Maggie. The food was delicious! Apple sauce, goulash of sorts, sweets...yum...

During the lunch and after the men left, the ladies gossiped. This was really a lot of fun. We stayed in first person and it was period gossip. It was really a great experience and I applaud the ladies for their commitment to first person. We discussed Mrs. Groff's likeness to an unseemly photo her husband was in possession of. We questioned how the contraband woman who was in the village this time last year has returned and as the proprietress of an ice cream shop in Philadelphia. Not sure how well she will do as she had a flavor called Squeal and Moo...bacon flavored ice cream? We shall see.

After lunch we had a chance to try our hand at archery. I epically failed :)

There were several kids at the event this year, from little babies to 'tweens. They ran around all day and wore themselves out.

Many of the structures were draped in bunting and pictures of Lincoln were in windows. Later in the afternoon we attended a memorial service for Abraham Lincoln. Even though we were in May, the service followed the order of Lincoln's actual funeral.

Since few if any of us knew the tunes of the hymns, they were read rather than sang. Before the service, Mrs. Kessler passed out memorial cards.

When the service was over, we took a group photo. The photographer is J.R. Pfeiffer from Gettysburg.

He had taken appointments for individual photos but I didn't make one in time. But...after the group photo he was taking walk ups as the sun allowed. I was lucky enough to get in. I don't yet have the image as I was not going to be there on Sunday to pick it up but here is a modern view of the pose.

I wanted to imitate the fashion plate the photo came from.

Guess I didn't remember quite how the fashion plate was posed :) But the photo turned out so well!! I will post the image when I receive it.

Dinner was served shortly after this and again was wonderful! Chicken curry, pork, peas, macaroni, yum again. After dinner we gathered around the campfire and played a game of Questions and Answers. Some very funny situations occurred.

Once it became to dark to read the cards I took my leave.

Another great Hopewell furnace. We made at least one newspaper. Really looking forward to next year!
The corset was produced in one of Carolann Schmitt's workshops several years ago; the first of her workshops I attended. I have been waiting for a time I could attend again. On April 24-26 I finally got the opportunity. The workshop starts on Friday evening with historical information, measurements and cutting out of the pattern. Unfortunately I had to work all day and wasn't able to make it to Gettysburg until later in the evening. I did manage to get my measurements, pattern cut out, and partly sewn together.

Workshop picked up first thing Saturday morning. We put the first layer of pieces together to size it. Once sized we mark the new sewing lines and cut the corrected pieces for the next layer.
More pictures of the originals can be found on my Flicker album.
Carolann fitted it for me and then laced it up.

And the finished product. Well...almost...I finished the bottom edging, tension hook, top hook and drawstring at home.
I really enjoy Carolann's classes. She is a great instructor, patient and very knowledgeable on the subjects.
Sunday is only a half day but we had two presentations. The first was Arlington House: The Last Battle of the Civil War by Ron Beavers. Very interesting history on the house. Then we heard from Nicki Hughes and The Humors of the Day: What Made our Ancestors Laugh. Entertaining talk and very corny jokes. No photos from Sunday. After the conference, I took Lisa to Gettysburg and we explored the Visitor's Center, the battlefield and finished with an early dinner at the Dobbin House.

The Symposium is such a great resource for those interested in Civil War era material culture. It really should be on the must do list for serious scholars of the period.

Next year the Symposium will be held on March 10-13, 2016. Keep an eye out on the website for information on next year. Plan to attend!Annette Bethkehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498791479254104257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4022647379997928907.post-25021823689316927862015-04-15T18:56:00.003-05:002015-04-15T18:56:45.255-05:00Fancy Dress PartyWhat you all have been waiting for!!
After the costume parade Mike Mescher put out period games. Our table tried Jack Straws.

Such a great time. There was no needlework competition this year; instead the costumes were the competition. There were several winners of various categories and I won one! The Saturday night entertainment after dinner is always fun.

Saturday. This is the first full day of presentations of the symposium and starts early. Breakfast Saturday and Sunday is included in the symposium fee. Saturday breakfast is the first time we get to see the faculty's dress and vests.

The first order of the day is basic housekeeping issues and then presentation of the symposium fabrics.

This is a long standing tradition with the event. Presenters are sent a length of the same fabric and asked to make a garment from it. It is always fun to see the different interpretations of the fabric. It is unknown how much longer this wonderful part of the symposium may continue as Carolann is finding it more difficult to find appropriate fabrics in the yardage quantities she needs.

After the fabric presentation and before the next sessions begin we get a break to go shopping and view the originals on display. Again, rather than posting all the originals here you can visit my Flicker page and see the pictures I took.

The presentations are on two separate tracks--one more female oriented and one more male. Thank goodness the workbook has the handouts for all the presentations as there were several on the "other" track that I was interested in.

The first presentation for me was Wrappers Redux and a Second Helping of Sheers by K. Krewer. I love K's presentations; she puts so much research into her talk and she is a great speaker. Her handouts are wonderful and full of illustrations. K examined wrappers and sheer dresses in great detail during the presentation.

The next presentation was Following the Drum: Regular Army Officers' Wives 1840-1870 by Kimberlee Bruce. Kimberlee was a new participant at the symposium and it was nice to hear more on army wives experiences; it's not something that is usually portrayed accurately at events.

Before lunch we heard from Colleen Formby Little Things Mean a Lot; a discussion on the little things that can make such a difference in a woman's dress such as buttons, garters, collars and cuffs. Colleen is a reference librarian and her handouts are full of great references.

After lunch we heard Cheyney McKnight's presentation In Their Lap: African American Slave Medicine. Cheyney was also a first timer at the symposium. She gave such a great presentation! Wonderful presenter and it was great to hear a topic addressing African American lives at the time. Cheyney discussed the health issues of slaves and how they were treated by the enslaved healers and white doctors on southern plantations.

The final presentation of the day was An Extreme Curiosity: Solo Women Travelers in the Mid-Nineteenth Century by Carolann Schmitt. Besides being a lovely and gracious woman, Carolann is a great presenter and researcher. Her topics are always well researched and presented with enthusiasm and peppered with great illustrations. This presentation focused on the mid-19th century solo travels of two women, Ida Laura Pfeiffer and Isabella Lucy Bird. These women didn't just travel to different cities or states, they traveled internationally at a time when few women traveled very far from home alone. I can't wait to read up on these ladies myself.

This was the end of the presentations for the day. We were now at our leisure to visit the exhibits, the marketplace and then get ready for the Fancy Dress party!Annette Bethkehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498791479254104257noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4022647379997928907.post-24144585526172562312015-03-28T19:31:00.001-05:002015-03-28T19:31:56.251-05:00Symposium FridayFriday we had a heck of a snow storm. Stormed all day. Many had to scrap their plans for off site visits. My first workshop was a bonnet frame workshop with Maggie Koenig. She provided us with patterns and instructions on how to size the frame for ourselves.

Rather than construct a full size frame, we worked on mini versions for practice. We blocked the back and bound the brim edges. I really enjoyed this session. It helped me really understand how to put my own frames together.

The workshop lasted until lunch.

In the afternoon I attended Carolann's talk on mid 19th century fabrics. This presentation covered the patterns, colors and production of fabrics in the mid 19th century. These sessions are always helpful when trying to decide if a contemporary fabric is "close enough". Unfortunately, so many of the great fabric patterns are not produced any longer or are produced on a different fabric. Carolann's sessions are always a great resource.

There were several other wonderful workshops Friday and I wish I could be in more than one place at a time: mourning cockades, woven buttons, eyeglass case...so many to choose from.

Between sessions and lunch I went shopping. The Market Place always has a great selection of vendors. One of the items that I have been coveting for a few years now are the shawls. This year I finally splurged and bought one.

I also bought a vulcanized belt buckle. Sorry the picture is sideways.

The presentation was great; there were several items from his and Carolann Schmitt's collections of rubber and pre-plastic items.

Of course the major highlight of the Symposium is the original displays. Rather than post all the pictures here, please visit my Flicker page that includes albums of all the different collections on display. However, there is one I must post here. I have adored this dress for years; even purchased fabric to reproduce it but never did for one reason or another. The dress belongs to K. Krewer and she brought it this year for display. I'm sure many of you will recognize it.

I just love this dress!

One of the wonderful experiences this year was to be able to help Janine Whiteman change out her display of originals. She and Philip have an amazing collection of items and I was privileged to help her with the dresses. She has a couple of dresses in which the sleeves were lined with flour sacks.

So ended Friday.

I apologize for the delay in posting my AAR; however, I came home with the flu and am just now getting over it.

I drove over to Camp Hill on Wednesday night. I had arranged to room with Lisa Jackson from England. She arrived later into Harrisburg on Wednesday night so I picked her up at the airport. While we were waiting for her luggage we ran into Heide Presse who was also attending the Symposium. We had a car full on the way back to Camp Hill.

The weather was expected to be nasty on Thursday and we were not disappointed. Several inches of snow fell all day Thursday.

This kind of wrecked havoc with the off site tours scheduled for that day as travel was a bit hazardous. I only had one workshop planned for Thursday so had a very nice leisurely morning sleeping in and ordering room service.

But I did finish it recently. At the marketplace I found some cotton velvet trimming at the Needle and Thread booth to accent the trim from Carolann. I really enjoyed making this. It is simple handwork that can be picked up and put down and picked up again. It was relatively simple, although there are some obvious corrections on my part needed next time. If you have a chance consider attending this workshop; Carolann is having another in November in Gettysburg. Visit her website for the exact information.
A note for future projects: spring for the good fabric, not the fake
stuff. It was such a chore to sew; my needle barely went through the
fabric.

The waist sash is also done and is red. On to the cape, which will be the yellow taffeta with red lining from which the sash was made. No more pictures until after the conference. Keep in mind as you go through this and the related posts that the point of the fancy dress was to develop an impression of the intended subject not to necessarily replicate it. Also, I am using non-period fabrics as stated in previous posts.

I used a brocade fabric that would mimic the designs on an actual jacket. I did not want to stitch on all the necessary trim so only added trim to add dimension. I used the bodice pattern from my last project and kept the basic period traits such as the dropped shoulder and the shoulder seam toward the back. Since this is a period fancy dress party I made the assumption that these traits would have been incorporated into any costume made at the time.

The sleeves were another issue. I picked from my patterns one I thought was from regular coat sleeves and ended up with shorter sleeves. So, ok, just an impression, right? I think with undersleeves it should be fine. I decided on coat sleeves to keep the period traits.

I then added the shoulder shields. I am going to change the tassels, removing one and placing the other to dangle from the center of the shield to be more in line with an actual jacket.

On to the skirt next. I plan to make a period pleated skirt with solid panels in the front and back and panels of the brocade fabric on the sides to represent the matador's pants. The skirt will only reach to the bottom of my hoop.
I stated before I am not using period correct fabric as this is a costume and will probably not be worn more than a couple of times.

Here is a picture of an original montera. Mine does not look quite so good; more like a smoking cap with bulbs attached to the ends.

I started with a buckram band covered in black fabric.

I then added the top. It is a bit bigger than the top on the original and I did not decorate it as other originals have been. The top was based with buckram as well.

I then added the bulbs. These are supposed to represent the bull's ears. I stuffed these with fiber fill.

It's not perfect by any definition, but it gives the impression of a montera and the impression is really what is important for this rather than an accurate, exact copy.
This is basically a masquerade party with or without masks. Since my life has been so unsettled the last few months I really hadn't thought about making another outfit. But then I had an epiphany. A matador, stylize. I went looking for pictures of 19th century matadors and found paintings, original jackets and a ballerina.

My costume will include a bolero type jacket, a chemisette I already have, and a skirt the length of my hoop rather than pants. Similar to this costume.

Now keep in mind this will be a costume, not something I will wear regularly in living history so I am not willing to spend the money I normally would on my living history dresses. My fabrics are not natural fibers. Originally I thought to use gimp to add simple designs to solid fabric. But then found a brocade that imitates the fancier fabrics of the jacket and side of the pants.

I plan to use the gold colored gimp to add a bit more dimension to the brocade. The yellow will be the front and back of the skirt and cape, the red of course will line the cape and a cummerbund, with the brocade as the sides of the skirt and jacket. I also have black fabric for the hat and will add a black silk bow tie similar to the ballerina above.

My purist historian is balking at using these fabrics but I really am looking forward to putting this together; it should be fun!

It was amazing being in the town in period dress, visiting the different exhibits and occupying one of the historic buildings. The event was Captain Flagg's 1864 US Quartermaster City. It was an AGSAS sanctioned event and since I am a candidate for membership in the group, I decided to attend.

Since I just started a new job I couldn't head out until around 4:30 and arrived in Harpers Ferry about 8:00 pm. Polly Steenhagen had arranged for several of us to stay in the Master Armorer's House. It is located just down the street from John Brown's fort.
As you can see, Saturday was not the best weather for an event or for public visitation. Sunday was much better. But we were inside the Confectionery and out of the weather.

For the last few years, Faith Mark Hintzen makes goodies to "sell" in the Confectionery. She prints script to give the soldiers who then use it to "buy" sweets. She had pies, cookies, breads, and candies.

Two of our visitors were soldiers, female soldiers. Their impression was great! They really tried to hide that they were women. It was really difficult to tell until up close or talking to them, but even then they looked and sounded like young men.
